About the collaboration

We have partnered with independent film streaming service INDEE+ to create a collection based on BIFA’s rich archive of nominated and winning films. The collection aims to refresh and reflect different BIFA themes throughout the year, such as emerging talent, debut filmmakers, and a variety of genres. INDEE+ also offers home premieres of new feature releases as well as short films, which are a vital part of the wider British independent film industry.

In keeping with BIFA’s ethos, the collection will showcase the best British independent films, along with independent films from across the globe. By collaborating with INDEE+, we hope to increase the accessibility of indie film and help underrepresented filmmakers reach new audiences.

WHAT’S IN THE COLLECTION?

From 1998 to the most recent 2021 awards, there have been a number of amazing and unique titles that deserve the spotlight. From unknowns to wide releases, INDEE+ are identifying and promoting the most innovative and creative filmmaking and filmmakers within the independent film community. We’ve highlighted some of our favourites.

BIFA RECOMMENDS…

BOILING POINT (2022)

From director Philip Barantini, this single-take thriller follows an emotionally scarred London chef as he struggles to wrangle his team on the busiest day of the year. It dominated the 2021 BIFAs with 11 nominations, and landed 4 wins for Best Supporting Actress (Vinette Robinson), Best Casting, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound. It showcases some amazing filmmaking and performances, while subtly but sensitively dealing with themes of addiction and discrimination.

What’s next for Philip Barantini? His 2022 TV Series The Responder, starring Martin Freeman, is available on BBC iPlayer.

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (2016)

Based on writer and activist James Baldwin’s unfinished book, this visual essay explores the lives and assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, and Malcolm X, using Baldwin’s words (narrated by Samuel L Jackson). It was nominated for Best International Independent Film at BIFA 2017. Directed by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck, this is one of the most important commentaries on race and the civil rights movement.

It stars BIFA Variety Award 2015 winner Kate Winslet alongside fellow BIFA winner Saoirse Ronan. The film explores themes of sexuality, and is loosely based on the acclaimed but unrecognised 19th Century fossil hunter Mary Anning.
