BIFA 2025 BRITISHNESS QUESTIONS

These are the supplementary questions we ask to help us determine if a film entry qualifies as British by our rules, where it’s status as British is not clear. You can download a pdf version of this page here.

BIFA considers someone to be British if they have a British passport or the right to hold one, or if they have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK or achieved ‘settled status’ by living in the UK for more than 5 years. 

  • Which of the key creatives (Director(s), Producer(s), Writer(s)) qualify as British?
  • Which of the Heads of Department qualify as British?
  • Where there is underlying source material (e.g. play, novel), was this British?
  • Which production company/producer originated the project?
  • Which production company/producer led development of the project?
  • Which production company/producer led pre-production of the project?
  • Which production company/producer was the lead during production?
  • Which production company/producer was the lead during post-production?
  • Which production company/producer led the sales and distribution process?
  • Which company/who financed development?
  • Which company(ies)/who contributed to the production budget and in what proportions?
  • Where did development take place?
  • Where did pre-production take place?
  • Where did production take place?
  • Where did post-production take place?
